Senators’ Stats: Oct 13-19, 2024
Written By: Trent Raynard
The Senators went 2-1-0 this past week, scoring 4.67 goals per game (second in the league) but also allowing 4.67 goals per game (27th in the league). The power play rate was 50 percent (7 for 14 - second best in the league), but the penalty kill rate was 70 percent (7 for 10 – 24th in the league). However, since the Senators were without the services of star goalie Linus Ullmark, we are going to overlook our defensive woes and focus on getting four points in three games.
Scoring Stats
Drake Batherson led the Sens in scoring this week with three goals and three assists for six points, including two goals and an assist against the Lightning. Jake Sanderson (a goal, five assists) and Brady Tkachuk (two goals, three assists) also had excellent weeks. Not surprisingly, Tkachuk and Batherson also led the team in shots (13 and 12 respectively) and scoring chances (14 and 10). For individual expected goals, Tkachuk led the team with 1.49, and Perron was second with 1.24.
Physical Stats
No one will be shocked to hear that Zack MacEwen led the team in penalty minutes with nine, including a 5-minute major for his fight against Tanner Jeannot on Monday. The team leaders in hits were centres Tim Stützle (10) and Josh Norris (9). Defensemen Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot, and Travis Hamonic each had 7 blocks.
Advanced Stats (at 5-on-5)
When looking at analytics, some of the players further down Ottawa’s lineup were able to shine though, giving evidence for the team’s improved depth this season. Jacob Bernard-Docker was the team leader in Corsi For% (64.15) and Shots For% (65.22). Despite Travis Hamonic’s struggles on the penalty kill, he had Ottawa’s best 5-on-5 Expected Goals For% (65.03). Perhaps most surprising, Zack MacEwen, buoyed by his two-goal performance against the Kings, was the leader in Scoring Chances For% (76.92).
The line of Perron-Pinto-Amadio had the team’s best underlying numbers, with an Expected Goals For% of 69.54 and a Scoring Chances For% of 65.00. Perhaps most impressively, their High-Danger Goals For% was an exceptional 71.43. Despite not starting the season together, the team’s defensive pairing with the best analytics this week was Kleven – Bernard-Docker (64.44 CF%, 57.95 xGF%, and 64.71 SCF%).
Goalie Stats
As I mentioned at the beginning, Linus Ullmark did not play this week so the crease was guarded by Anton Forsberg and Mads Søgaard. I used the word “guarded” hesitantly because goaltending was not one of the team’s strengths. Despite the team’s 2-1-0 record, our goalies had a combined 0.844 SV%, 4.70 GAA, and -6.60 Goals Saved Above Expected. Luckily, our potent offence was able to pick up most of the slack. With Ullmark expected to return in the next few days, we can look forward to seeing better results on the defensive end of the ice.
Team Milestones
I am going to end this post with some team milestones that were reached this week.
Tim Stützle moved past Chris Neil into 17th on the team’s all-time points list (253 points).
Drake Batherson moved past Magnus Arvedson into 21st on the team’s all-time goals list (93 goals).
Brady Tkachuk moved past Mark Stone into 10th on the team’s all-time assists list (191 assists).
Thomas Chabot moved past Craig Anderson into 18th on the team’s all-time games played list (437 games).
Jake Sanderson moved him past Joe Corvo into 16th on the team’s all-time points list for defensemen (77 points).
